bobbeeboy1 Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 I have the dreaded 1.9 TDi Turbo power loss problem to limp home mode when you put it under stress going up hills or over taking at around 70 mph (happens other times when accelerating and changing through the gears). I have read several threads on the forum where many people have experienced the same and I get the picture it can be many things going wrong; vanes, MAF, TMAF, vacuum pipes, air filter, to name but a few. Who has successfully fixed the problem and how did you do it? For those interested my Galaxy has done 156k seems to be lowish on power generally and this may be related to the problem but I put this down to mileage and general all round wear. Interestingly the problem gets less frequent the more Redex Fuel System Cleaner I add but never goes away, happens every journey unless I slow down, change to fourth or even third when going up hills, keep it below 70 mph on the motorway in 5th or 6th unless going down hill or stick to using 4th on the motorway. Tried keeping it in 4th (4 x 35 mile journeys) to clear the vanes and this certainly reduced problem while I did it, zoomed along at 80mph no problem with around 1 drop out of the turbo per journey as it went up an incline but as soon as I tried using 5th and 6th again or tried to accelerate up a hill from say 20 to 50mph turbo drop out returned. Any ideas for the order to investigate the problem welcome. Quote

Hi When you switch the engine off and then restart it resets something and normal turbo power returns everytime.Cheers Quote
big_kev Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 Stop buying the redex snake oil and invest your money in a vagcom lead from ebay. Download the free software and see what the faults are. It is almost certainly some trivial easily repaired electrical fault that is upsetting the Engines ECU. Quote
JDHogg Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 Had the same problem myself on my 03 130TDI. Best approach is to tackle the likely culprits in ascending cost-order. Prob easiest to check first is the MAF, sensors, vacuum pipes etc. After ruling about the above, you can then take on the turbo , if needed. Think there is a post in the technical FAQ on how-to. Tim-spam seems to be most knowledgable on the subject. Unfortunately, for me, I had to get a replacement (new) turbo as I had a KKK turbo, which, apparently is not as straightforward [as the Garrets] to clean and for an experienced mechanic only. However, I saved money by avoiding Fords who quoted Quote

big_kev Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 Strangely, when the car is travelling slowly (e.g. in a car park) and it fails, it's as though the brakes have been stamped on, throwing you forward in your seat. Very weird! My money is on the brake switch ( could be something else though ;) ). Should be easily diagnosed with Vagcom or similar. Quote

Any ideas for the order to investigate the problem welcome. Hi My mate had the same problem on a mk2 Galaxy 115bhp going into limp mode when under load ie with the caravan on. He took the following systematic aproach to fix it after the dealer failed. 1 Read the error code generated which was low boost pressure.2 Checked the vacuum pipes to EGR valve and to the turbo. OK3 Changed the T Map sensor for a known working one. Still not cured.4 Took the EGR valve off, was full of crap and not sealing, cleaned it, still not cured.5 Check the turbo actuator, found it sticking, when the turbo was removed he found a build up of rust on the actuator preventing full movement. You could move the actuator by hand through the resistance but there was not enough power to overcome it with just vacuum.6 Cleaned the turbo as per instructions on one of the posts and problem solved. He took this approach to fix it starting with the easiest/cheapest options first, it could have been any of them causing it he was just unlucky it was the last two most difficult items that were causing it. Hope this helps. Andy Met Quote

Rosie Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 I had the same problems that you have experienced and have tried all the remedies posted on this site, but all with negative results. After speaking to a mechanic firend who told me that Turbo,s get dirty with carbon soot etc, this causes them to get sticky and not operate properly. The remedy is simple.Go to Halfords and by an aersol can of Turbo cleaner ( Quote

JDHogg Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 Thanks for the link, mk2vr6 :D I had a look at the site and found this interesting article (link below) on the product posted by Audi Driver mag - it seems to suggest that the product does indeed work. Even so, I still tend to be a bit skeptical over these 'magical' fixes, so would be interested to hear if anyone on this site has used it succesfully. http://www.innotecworld.com/images/documen...di%20Driver.pdf It also suggests using good quality fuel and oil as a preventative measure as these help slow the build up of carbon deposits on the vanes. AndyBWales Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 I would suggest looking towards a turbo that needs 'de-clogging' is the right approach. I did it ... and it made all the difference. However ... in my case anyway ... it wasnt the vanes themselves that were stuck, but the mechaism that actuates the vanes, inside the turbo ... and I doubt a 'turbo cleaner' would get into the places I had to clean out with a wire brush! Anyway ... its a big job ... but well worth it ... Is this on the outside of the turbo?Mines been playing up quite a bit so I had a poke round earlier. THeres a cylinder on top and to the rear of the turbo that has an small arm coming out of the bottom into the turbo body. I can move this a tiny bit, probably no more that 3 - 4 mm. Should it move further than this and with any effort?Cheers Quote
mike.hanks Posted January 11, 2010 Report Posted January 11, 2010 I posted this on another thred, and thought I'd add it here....I have a Y/2000 Galaxy, 1.9TDI 115. I recently bought the car from a dealer with 105k miles on the clock. When I test drove it the dealer informed me that the Air Mass Meter needed replacing and that he would change it if I bought the car - the symptons were intermittant loss of power. For the first week after buying the car it seemed fine, albeit a bit juddery at times, however it started playing up after a week or so. The dealer took the car back and replaced the Air Mass Meter again, and again it seemed OK for a week or so and then played up again. Switching the engine off and then on again seems to solve the problem, but it eventually came back every time. This time, with the dealers agreement, I took the car to a local garage and they diagnosed the fault as being "excessive boost pressure" in the turbo. Initially I was asking the dealer to replace the turbo, but then I found a company who as well as supplying standard Ford Turbos can also repair them. For a cost of Quote
